Keep leaves, pine needles and roof grit out of your gutters. FRS Roofing + Gutters, a family-owned contractor based in Medford, MA since 1999, installs gutter guards on new and existing gutters across Greater Boston.
What gutter guards do
Gutter guards cover the top of the gutter so leaves, pine needles, seeds and roof grit stay out while rainwater still flows in. In New England, where fall leaves and spring pollen fill gutters fast, guards reduce how often gutters need cleaning and help keep downspouts from clogging and overflowing against siding and foundations.
Types of gutter guards
Micro-mesh
Fine stainless or aluminum mesh that blocks small debris such as pine needles and shingle grit while letting water through.
Screens
Perforated metal or vinyl screens – a lower-cost option that stops leaves but lets finer debris pass.
Reverse-curve (surface tension)
A solid cover that guides water around a curved edge into the gutter while debris slides off.
Brush & foam inserts
Inserts that sit inside the gutter. Easy to add, but they need cleaning and replacement more often.
We look at the trees around your home, the roof pitch and the condition of your existing gutters before recommending a guard. If the gutters are sagging, leaking or undersized, we may recommend gutter repair or replacement first.
Gutter guards and winter
Guards do not prevent ice dams – those form on the roof when warm attic air melts snow that refreezes at the eaves. Clean, free-flowing gutters do help meltwater drain away. Attic insulation and ventilation are the long-term fix for ice dams.

Frequently asked questions
Do gutter guards eliminate cleaning completely?
No. They greatly reduce how often gutters need attention, but the tops of the guards and the downspouts still need an occasional check, especially after fall.
Can guards be added to my existing gutters?
Usually, if the gutters are in good condition and properly pitched. We check that during the inspection.
Which type is best for pine needles?
Fine micro-mesh guards are generally the most effective against pine needles and small debris.
